Safety Guidelines After a Hurricane

MPOM Recommendations Based on Weather.gov

In the aftermath of a hurricane, ensuring your safety and the safety of those around you is critical. As Medical Professionals on a Mission (MPOM), we encourage everyone to follow these essential guidelines:

  • Stay Informed: Keep listening to a NOAA Weather Radio or local news for the latest updates and safety instructions from authorities.
  • Return Home Only When Safe: If you evacuated, return to your home only after officials have declared it safe to do so.
  • Drive with Caution: Once home, drive only if absolutely necessary. Avoid flooded roads and washed-out bridges. Be aware of fallen objects, downed electrical wires, and weakened infrastructure such as walls, bridges, roads, and sidewalks that may collapse.
  • Inspect Your Property: Walk carefully around your home’s exterior to check for hazards like loose power lines, gas leaks, or structural damage.
  • Stay Out of Unsafe Buildings: Do not enter any building if:
    • You smell gas.
    • Floodwaters are still present around the building.
    • The structure has been damaged by fire.
    • Authorities have not yet declared it safe.
  • Carbon Monoxide Awareness: Carbon monoxide poisoning is one of the leading causes of death after storms, particularly in areas with power outages. Never use a portable generator indoors or in enclosed spaces like garages. Always review generator safety before using one.
  • Use Flashlights, Not Candles: To reduce the risk of fire, always use battery-powered flashlights instead of candles. When entering a vacated building, turn on the flashlight before stepping inside to avoid the risk of igniting leaking gas, if present.

By following these safety measures, you can help protect yourself, your family, and your community in the aftermath of a hurricane. MPOM remains committed to supporting recovery efforts when necessary, standing by to assist as needed. Stay safe and take all precautions to minimize risks after the storm.
